Case study: Global media company

Enabling a renowned global media company to become the leader in the fight against climate change

This global media company embarked on an ambitious sustainability journey with the aim of quantifying the carbon footprint of their magazines, events, digital content and wider aspects of their operations.

The challenge

A large magazine publisher embarked on a carbon management journey with CarbonQuota to establish a strategy, a functional execution plan and a new carbon baseline. The aim was to deploy a roadmap to increase granularity and de-carbonise across the entire business, by focusing on multiple procurement categories

The solution

A bottom-up approach was adopted to develop a bespoke de-carbonisation roadmap focusing on key carbon categories, which included category strategies for; data collection, supplier engagement and system integrations.

The outcomes

Integration & Automation

Processes to capture, calculate and report and reduce carbon emissions data across multiple categories via integration, surveys and bulk upload of activity data.

Carbon portal

A customised portal for company-wide carbon reporting and Scope 3 visibility to target departmental reductions.

Granularity

Enhanced visibility across key categories including print, events, content creation, digital, merchandise, business travel & operations.

Sustainable procurement

Developed the first Sustainable Procurement Policy to support changing behaviours across the category teams.

Supply chain engagement

Introduced software tools for suppliers to calculate their own carbon emissions and consolidate into single platform.

What they think

“Through automation, we are now able to gather, process and calculate more data – to a higher degree of accuracy, in much less time. For example, across our magazines, we’ve moved away from a manual, time consuming, Excel-based process, to an integrated quarterly reporting structure, leveraging technology to facilitate data capture and calculation in a click of a button.

This has freed up our Global Production Directors to focus on more productive activity, decarbonisation and sustainable supplier management.”
